Matson Private Library

Across from the beautiful gardens of the Matson/Colgan Kitchen, Uncarved Block constructed a very special space.  The home owners wanted a space where they could keep their collection of books and manuscripts. In collaboration with a timber- framing class at the Heartwood School in Washington Ma., we helped to create a refuge for reading and relaxing.  This space was constructed with a traditional style timber frame called a cruck frame that was built and erected by the Hardwood School class.  The exterior of the structure is sided with reclaimed red cedar siding treated with Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese wood burning technique when the wood is burned to create a rich dark surface. This structure also features an eyebrow dormer with an antique arch top window that allows light to pour in and illuminate the inside of the space. The library was featured in a Berkshire Magazine piece.
